Summer's Here!

Posted by Warren in Summer , Newsletter , Camps

School is out, the temperature and humidity are rising, and yes, that’s a mosquito bite on your arm. It’s summer time!

In many urban areas, summer time for youth means sitting in front of the TV or getting into trouble in the neighborhood. Fortunately, youth in our community will have the opportunity to participate in summer camps through the USC. From local day camps at Cedar Ridge Christian Church and Olathe Bible Church to weekend retreats at Rock Springs Ranch and Morningstar Ranch, our youth will be involved in fun, positive activities all summer long.

In addition to camp, the USC is continuing its Summer Soul Food program. In partnership with Bryant Apartments, the USC will engage children from our neighborhood in games and reading while building relationships. Our prayer is that through these summer activities, many children and their families will come to know Christ.

Extraordinary People

Travis and Kristy Webb; adoptive & foster parents, teachers, USC volunteers and more...

God has blessed The USC with many new outstanding volunteer mentors.  This year USC has more than 22 mentors that work with urban youth on a weekly basis.  These mentors give generously of their time and talents despite busy schedules.

Two of the most remarkable volunteers to join the USC mentor team this year are Travis Kristy Webb.  God has called them to impact the lives of children in numerous ways.  In addition to having three school-age children that they have adopted from Ethiopia, they serve as foster parents to two infants.  They are also in the process of adopting three children from Liberia.  Travis works during the day as a junior high teacher and coach while Kristy home schools the children.

Despite their busy schedules, Travis and Kristy serve as Soul Food and JAM mentors every Wednesday night while their older children attend the ministry programs.  They have not only found time to serve in the urban core of KCK, but do so with dedication and consistency.

As their family continues to grow, Travis and Kristy are in need of two vehicles in great working condition; one vehicle that gets good gas mileage for Travis, and another vehicle with the capacity to accommodate their family of 10. They are also in need of a larger home for their family.

Please contact The USC if you would like to bless this extraordinary family.

Community Transformation

Keavin, started attending The USC programs several years ago; a total of 15 members of his family are actively involved in The USC partner church, Servant Community Church.

More than three years ago a young boy named Keavin walked through the doors of The USC to attend Life Enrichment, USC's after school discipleship program.  Shortly thereafter, he started attending Soul Food on Wednesday nights and he even brought along his younger siblings.  Soon after Keavin and his siblings started attending Soul Food, his mother sat in on an Alpha session, an introductory Bible Study for adults held during The USC's Wednesday night outreach.

As Keavin's relationship with Christ developed, he started attending The USC's partner church, Servant Community Church (SCC), on Sundays.  One Sunday his mom attended church with him.  As the weeks went on, other family members began to come to SCC with Keavin and his mom and soon Keavin's whole family was regularly attending Sunday morning services.

Keavin and his mom's love of Christ and desire to be involved with a family of Believers was contagious.  It spread to their immediate family and then onto other relatives and friends.  Many members of his extended family are now attending SCC, including several uncles, aunts and many cousins.

In the last few months, six members of Keavin's family, including Keavin himself, have been baptized.  His family has become an integral part of SCC's church body, attending women's and men's Bible Studies, serving in the nursery and in other various ministries on Sundays and throughout the week and actively sharing their faith with their friends and family.  In fact, several more of their friends have started attending SCC and are going through discipleship courses.  The fruits of our labor are being seen as we humbly submit to the Lord's call to transform lives in Kansas City, Kansas.  -Story by Andrea Mathew

God uses a variety of ways to draw us to him.  What started as one young boy attending a weekly Bible Study has grown into a family of believers that are now living to follow Jesus.

Small but Mighty

Posted by chuck in Newsletter

Jaila (left)On Wednesday nights, students from Kindergarten through 12th grade come to The USC to share a meal, engage in a joyous time of praise and worship, have small group Bible study and take part in other fun activities. One of the highlights of the evening is when students get to recite their memory verse. At the end of the semester, the student who memorized all of the verses receives an award. Jaila Law, a first grade student, received the top award for memorizing the most verses! Praise the Lord for her dedication to store the Word of God in her heart.

Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12)
